Publicity Poster Stamps
Set of 2 poster stamps issued as publicity for "
Københavns Højskoleforening
" which is an organization devoted to adult public education. In Denmark (and some other countries) the "Folk High Schools" are educational institutions for adults that do not confer degrees. They exist simply to promote advanced learning and education among adults.
According to the organizations's website at koehoe.dk:
Københavns Højskoleforening is a voluntary association based on Grundtvig's ideas about public education. The association aims to be a meeting place in Copenhagen for everyone who wants to participate in an informative community with events that inspire and make us wiser.
Every year, the association therefore holds lectures, community singing, Sunday dinners, debate events and much more. And in the folk high school association, all interested parties are welcome, regardless of whether they have been to folk high school or not.
The organization's history:
Many believe that the Folk High School Association has been formed for young girls from the province who came to Copenhagen after a folk high school stay, and that this is why the Folk High School Association has events on Wednesday and Sunday where the maids could be lucky to have time off. But that is not entirely true. Women did not have access at all in the beginning, and Saturday night was the most important.
Højskoleforeningen originated from Grundtvig circles in Copenhagen with priest and poet JC Hostrup and Member of Parliament Harald Holm at the helm. Together with five or six other men, they had a vision to create a meeting place for old high school students, so that one could continue the formation process that had begun with a high school stay. In April 1878, it became a high school association with access for all sections of society, soldiers, students, artisans, merchants, academics. However, not yet for women.
Great emphasis was placed on member democracy, on the living word and on access to reading. Debate evenings were held and everyone could suggest a topic. Topics were suggested such as "Keep the majority of the Danish people at Dannevirke as a border, or do you want it drawn according to the people's vote in certain districts" or "Whether the spirit of the people should be thought of as personal or not" or "Should one assume that Woman as a personality is equal with the husband or subordinate ”. Burning questions, but unfortunately the proposal book does not tell what the outcome was. Other evenings, famous people from the folk high schools or the Grundtvig circles were summoned, or there were readings by actors.
One could also suggest procurements for the important library. There were sharp attitudes to the books, and IP Jacobsen's "Niels Lyhne" was only acquired after more than four years of discussion. Jokes like Punch were discussed but not procured.
The members paid DKK 1 per month in membership fees, and it was possible to apply for a reduction in the membership fee. Individual wealthy members usually volunteered when needed.
As early as October 1878, six months after the association was formed, it moved into an apartment in Fiolstræde with 3 rooms for daily activities and rooms for pensioners. Ms. Mathilde Petersen was hired as a hostess and was of great importance for the association to develop into a home port for many young people. There were daily rykind of especially soldiers and students, and on Sunday they gathered for Ms. Petersen's Sunday dinner. Among the pensioners who lived in the association for periods, there were well-known names from Grundtvig circles and several members of parliament.
In the beginning it was especially Saturday that there were lectures or debates. For the first four years, Wednesday evening was reserved for meetings for soldiers, but they were given their own premises, so from 1883, series of lectures were held on Wednesdays and alternating events on Saturdays.
When the association became a year old, the membership was up to 126, which was more than expected. At the first general meeting in May 1879, Supreme Court Attorney Svend Høgsbro proposed a purpose clause for the association: “The purpose of the Folk High School Association is to be a gathering place for friends of the folk high school idea. It therefore concerns both men and women. ” The proposal fell, i.a. because women with big dresses filled twice as much as men in the audience! Nor was it decided to support a singing association because it would disturb the readers. Later, both proposals came through, just as a gymnastics association came into being.
This is a set of two Mærkat style poster stamps, published by F. E. Bording A/S, probably in 1942, and they are numbered 1291 and 1292.
Stamp number 1291 depicts a map of Denmark in a circle and has the text "
SLUTTER KREDS OG STAAR FAST ALLE DANSKE MÆND
" (Close ranks and stand fast all Danish men) which is a reference to the 1848 Battle of Schleswig. Immediately after the battle, the poet Carl Ploug wrote the poem
"The Easter bell chimed mildly"
, which was performed at a concert in the Casino for the benefit of the wounded and the bereaved.
Stamp number 1292 depicts the
Frihedsstøtten
According to the Danish encyclopedia "Den Store Dansk":
The Freedom Memorial, a monument commemorating the abolition of Stavnsbånd (Serfdom) in 1788, built 1792-97 outside Copenhagen's Vesterport, now Vesterbrogade.
The Freedom Memorial is an obelisk in Bornholm sandstone with a plinth of Norwegian marble. It was funded through a fundraiser initiated by a circle of Copenhagen citizens in 1791; the following year, the foundation stone was laid by Crown Prince Frederik (6th).
The Freedom Memorial was allegedly raised by the citizens of the country in gratitude for the agrarian reforms, whereby the king freed the peasant population from injustice and oppression. The notion of the reforms as initiated primarily on the initiative of the state is supported by the inscription "The king commanded serfdom to cease".
The text on this stamp "
FRIT AT TÆNKE, TRO AT TALE, DET ER FOLKETS GAMLE RET
" (Freedom to think, believe, and speak freely - that is the peoples' oldest right) is one of the cornerstone beliefs of Danish equity for all.
The stamps' designs are by Danish artist Hakon Spliid.
According to the website danskplakatmuseum.dk:
Hakon Spliid
24.4.1893 – 30.8.1959
Like his father, Hakon Spliid was originally trained as a baker and confectioner, but he soon followed an urge to draw. He graduated from the School of Technology in Copenhagen, and took the national training as a drawing instructor. In the field of posters he is best known for his striking tourist posters from the early 1920s and onwards. These posters show recognisable motifs from Danish towns, monumentally portraying important features, such as the churches in the towns.
These examples are F/VF, OG, NH.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).
Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.
A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum:
Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.
* A Note about "Stock Images":
Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words:
"STOCK IMAGE"
at the end of the description.
