First published in 1927, and republished yearly with a few exceptions, would place this volume to the year 1930, although it is not dated. From the preface,
THE study of the operation, care and repair of farm implements becomes increasingly important with the steady growth in the use of farm machines. The farmer of today with his machines of greater working capacities must be a more efficient mechanic than were his father and his grandfather, whose machines were comparatively simple.
The high schools and agricultural colleges of the United States are doing a very commendable work in teaching farm mechanics to the young men who will be the farmers and agricultural leaders of tomorrow. The activity of these institutions in encouraging the use of more efficient machines and teaching the proper methods of adjustment and operation of all farm implements is certain to result in the lowering of production costs throughout the agricultural industry.
It is the purpose of this book to assist instructors in farm mechanics in giving a thorough and practical course in the operation, care and repair of the more important farm machines. It is designed especially for those who make a study of farm mechanics in high schools, colleges and short courses with the expectation of applying the knowledge gained to actual farming or to the instruction of others.
The unqualified endorsement given the first editions of this book by educators the country over led to the production of this, the fourth edition. It is the hope of the publisher that this more thorough and complete text book will be of even greater value than its predecessors in filling the long-felt need complete text dealing only with the operation, care and repair of farm machines.
The publisher wishes to express appreciation to high-school instructors in agriculture, agricultural college professors and state supervisors of agricultural education for the assistance and suggestions so generously given in the preparation of this and the previous editions.
